860 Washington Street is showing three works by New York-based painter Cat Balco in the lobby gallery through October 2024.
Balco's bright abstract paintings employ sweeping brush strokes and pools of paint which appear to extend far beyond the edges of the canvas. Developed by zooming in on sections of previous paintings, the artist uses the materials and language of abstract expressionist painters like Franz Kline, Helen Frankenthaler, and Ed Clark. Dense passages of poured acrylic paint result in satisfying impasto and broad brush strokes are created using a push broom––both aiding in the illusion of these works being cut from some other colossal canvas.
This exhibition was produced in partnership with Rick Wester Fine Art. The show is open to the public from 9 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday.
