527 Madison Avenue is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by Steven Salzman in the Lobby Gallery from July 15 – December 1, 2020. Located at 54th Street and Madison Avenue, the show is open to the public 9 AM – 5 PM, Monday through Friday. Visitors are required to wear masks and observe social distancing protocols. This will be the eighteenth exhibition in 527 Madison’s ongoing program showcasing noteworthy emerging and mid-career artists.
A New York City native, Salzman is heavily inspired not only by the geometry of the urban landscape but the subtle modulations of city light as well. His abstractions exist “in a space that [is] both deep and far away, all neatly contained by the rectangle of the window frame.” Two of the five works on view incorporate interference medium, which creates a shifting iridescent glow as it captures the light of its environment. Salzman uses this unique material quite often, incorporating it amongst his sharp geometric forms which elicit the way light filters through the city and flickers off the buildings.
The precision of his hard-edge painting style and evocative use of color is due in part to his formative experiences working with master colorist Sanford Wurmfeld and seminal artists Ellsworth Kelly, Tom Wesselmann, and Judy Rifka. Salzman studied at the Art-Students League, Bard College, Hunter College, and the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. His work has been exhibited widely in galleries and alternative spaces, including the Drawing Center and White Columns, as well as solo exhibitions at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Long Island and Bard College. He lives and works in New York City.
